Author's Note: You guys, I've been working on this off and on for over a week, holy shit. My blood, sweat, and tears went into this. And honestly? I'M PRETTY FRICKIN PROUD OF IT. It's 4,000+ words, which is, I think, the longest one-shot I've ever written. Anywho, there are spoilers for Big Hero 6, so if you haven't seen it yet and don't want things spoiled, you shouldn't read this! I REALLY HOPE YOU GUYS LIKE THIS

You hummed to yourself as you tinkered with your machine, twisting your wrench and tightening a bolt. You heard two sets of footsteps entering your section of the huge workroom, not having to look up to know that one of them belonged to Tadashi. The second set was quieter, which meant that the person was smaller than Tadashi, so that meant it could be GoGo or Honey Lemon, maybe, but Honey Lemon didn’t usually venture over to your workspace and GoGo’s footsteps were quicker and more precise than the ones you were currently hearing. These ones were slow, yet somehow…awkward.

“Hiro?” You guessed aloud, glancing up to see if you were correct. You mentally cheered when you saw the shaggy haired boy who was standing next to Tadashi.

“How did you know?” Hiro asked, looking up at you curiously. “I’ve never met you before.”

Tadashi walked over to your side, slinging an arm around your shoulders. “__y/n__ here has this sort of gift, she learns people’s walking patterns and she remembers them, so she always knows when any of us try to sneak up on her.”

“Which happens far more often than you’d think, even though they all know it doesn’t work.” You commented dryly.

Tadashi just shrugged, waving with his hand for Hiro to step closer. “Hiro, __y/n__. __y/n__, Hiro.”

You smiled at him, putting down your wrench and extending your hand. “Nice to meet you, Hiro. I’ve heard a lot about you.”

Hiro smiled back, revealing a cute little gap between his two front teeth as he shook your hand. “Nice to meet you too. Tadashi talks to our aunt about you all the time. ‘Oh, Aunt Cass, she’s so cute!’ ‘How do you ask a girl out?’ Stuff like that.”

You raised an eyebrow, turning your head so that you could look at Tadashi and try to figure out if Hiro was being serious or not. Based on the way Tadashi was glaring at Hiro, he was.

Hiro smiled at him smugly before exiting your workspace, probably going to go bother Wasabi or Fred.

You waved a hand in front of Tadashi’s face. “You okay?”

“Yeah, uh, sorry about-“ Tadashi gestured with his hand in the direction Hiro had gone. “That.” He extracted his arm from around your shoulders, awkwardly scratching at the back of his neck.

“No need to be sorry. My little sisters are ten times worse than him when it comes to boys.” You said with a chuckle, remembering this one time years ago when you had accidentally mentioned that you thought this boy in your class was cute and they had bombarded you with questions (that boy was definitely not the now very unfairly attractive Tadashi, who you had gone from noticing to full on crushing on in the past couple of years).

“Though, you know,” You started, only to be interrupted as a loud crash was heard from nearby. You stopped talking, glancing around until you spotted a bunch of wrenches and screwdrivers that had been knocked over and piled in a heap.

Hiro stood next to them, looking sheepish. “Sorry?” He offered as you and Tadashi walked over to him and helped put the tools back on their rightful table. You fought off the blush that threatened to spread across your face as you and Tadashi reached for the same screwdriver, his fingers lingering on yours for longer than was strictly necessary.

Tadashi jumped when he seemed to realize what he was doing. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to, uh…” He trailed off, moving his fingers and hurriedly placing some wrenches on the table.

You blinked, continuing to clean up the mess until they were all stacked neatly on the table.

“Hiro and I should probably get going; Aunt Cass is probably expecting us home soon.” Tadashi said, standing up and holding out his hand to you. You took it gratefully, allowing him to pull you up and out of your crouching position.

“Okay, tell her I said hi.” You said, dusting the dirt off your knees.

Tadashi smiled. “I will.”

 --------------------------------------

“You like her.” Hiro stated matter-of-factly as he and Tadashi rode the elevator to the ground floor.

“Who exactly do I like?” Tadashi asked, feigning ignorance.

“__y/n__. And don’t even try to deny it, it’s obvious.”

“We’re just friends.” Tadashi said, but he wouldn’t meet Hiro’s eyes.

Hiro rolled his eyes. “Nope. You like her, and she likes you too.”

Tadashi shook his head, but he was unable to hide the tinge of pink that was dusting his cheeks.

-----------------------------------------

“Hiro?” You asked, rushing over to his side. “Are you okay?” You helped him up into a sitting position, looking around. “Where’s Tadashi?”

Hiro glanced up at you, and you just now noticed the tears in his eyes. His gaze then moved to the San Fransokyo Tech building behind you.

You followed his gaze, gaping at the burning building. You felt a lump starting to form in your throat, speaking around it. “No. No, please, tell me he didn’t.”

Hiro just shook his head. You felt something nudge your hand, looking down to see Tadashi’s baseball cap resting innocently on the ground. You clapped a hand over your mouth, biting your lip in an attempt to keep your tears at bay. Hiro didn’t need to see you cry.

You dug your phone out of your pocket, hurriedly calling the fire department.

“Hello? Yes, I’d like to report a fire at San Fransokyo Tech…”

-----------------------------------

You glanced at your tablet, ignoring the messages from Wasabi and GoGo and Honey Lemon and Fred that were piling up. You hadn’t been to school for almost two weeks; you just…you couldn’t bring yourself to get out of bed. You weren’t strong enough to go into the workroom and just pretend that everything was fine when it wasn’t.

Tadashi was dead.

And there was nothing you could do to bring him back.

You felt empty. Hollow. Broken. Sad. Miserable. The only time you were happy anymore was when you slept, because you almost always dreamt about Tadashi. And in your dreams, you and him were happily dating, and you got to hold his hand and watch sci-fi movies with him and do all the things you had hoped to someday do. But then you would wake up, and all the sadness and pain would come crashing back into you like a runaway train.

Tadashi was gone.

That perfect little relationship you had been wanting would never happen. You didn’t even think you could handle trying to date anyone else, at least not for a long, long time. Because they wouldn’t be Tadashi, and they wouldn’t have Tadashi’s smile or his eyes or his love for helping people.

One of the absolute worst things of all?

You didn’t even know if Tadashi had actually liked you back or not.

He had acted like he did sometimes, and then there was that little incident with Hiro, but he never confirmed it or asked you out or anything so you didn’t know if you were just imaging it or not.

Your tablet beeped again, signaling that you had a video message. You clicked on it, surprised to see that it was from Aunt Cass. You had only visited Tadashi’s house a couple of times but each time Aunt Cass was there to offer food and hugs and support and knowing smiles as you and Tadashi worked on projects together.

“Hey sweetie,” Aunt Cass started, and her face looked so sad and tired that you had to continue watching the video. “How’re you feeling? I thought that you might want to, I don’t know, come over? I was going through some of…” She paused. “His stuff, and I thought that you might want some of it. One of his sweaters or something?” Aunt Cass sighed. “Honestly, I just want to make sure you’re doing okay. I’ll see you soon, hopefully.” She said, waving at the tablet before clicking a button.

The video went dark, but you could still hear Aunt Cass moving around and cursing. You couldn’t help the laugh that bubbled out of your throat before the video message finally ended.

Maybe you would go visit Hiro and Aunt Cass, you could use some sunlight and-you took a whiff of your armpits- a shower.

-------------------------------------

You knocked on the door to Aunt Cass’s café, which had been closed for about a week after it happened, but had recently reopened. You assumed Aunt Cass had been throwing herself into her cooking and her baking to deal with the loss, which, you reasoned, was a good strategy.

“__y/n__! It’s so great to see you!” Aunt Cass exclaimed cheerfully, bustling you inside before she threw her arms around you. Her voice was softer when she spoke again. “How’re you holding up?”

You just shrugged. “I haven’t fallen apart yet, I guess. How’s Hiro?”

Aunt Cass shook her head. “Not good. Poor dear hasn’t left his room in ages.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. Do you want me to, I dunno, talk to him or something?”

“You can try if you want, but I don’t know if it’ll do any good. You can go on up sweetheart; the box on the bed is full of stuff you can take.”

“Thanks.” You smiled at her, waving as you bounded up the stairs. You tapped on Hiro’s bedroom door, waiting for him to respond.

You heard a very muffled “Come in!”, pushing the door open and entering the room.

“Hey, Hiro.” You said quietly, raising an eyebrow at the pile of blankets on his bed. You poked it with a finger, and Hiro popped his head out. “How can you breathe under there?”

Hiro shrugged. “What’re you doing here? Did Aunt Cass get you here so you could come talk to me?”

“Nah. I don’t know what I could possibly say to you that everyone else hasn’t already said. I’m struggling as much as you are, bud.” You sat on the edge of his bed, glancing around the room that seemed so dull and lifeless without Tadashi in it.

“Why’d you come over?” Hiro asked curiously, inching out of his blanket cocoon. You nodded to the box of clothes on Tadashi’s old bed.

“Aunt Cass said I could take an old sweater or something and I couldn’t pass that up.” You answered, shrugging. “I need to hold on to something of his.”

Hiro nodded in understanding. “Take whatever you want.”

“Thanks.” You said, smiling softly as you stood up and walked over to Tadashi’s bed. You carefully looked through the box, feeling a sudden wave of sadness wash over you as you looked at the clothes that were just so Tadashi.

His scent, something along the lines of antiseptic and toothpaste, still lingered on all of the clothes, and you barely had time to make sure you were facing away from Hiro before the first tears started to fall. You cursed, hastily wiping your eyes and trying to dry them.

You sniffled, cocking your head to the side as you heard a balloon filling up with air? You gazed around the room, eyes widening when you saw what was making the noise.

“Baymax?”

The robot glanced up at you, pausing his attempt to squeeze past the bed.

“Hello, __y/n__. It is good to see you again.”

“You…you’re still functional?”

Baymax nodded. “I heard a sound of distress and I am compelled to offer my assistance.”

“I’m fine, you can turn off now.”

Baymax scanned you. “You are not fine. I am detecting very high levels of emotional distress.”

“I think that’s only logical given what happened.” You said, shrugging.

Baymax looked confused (well, as confused as a robot could). “What did happen?”

You blinked. “Crap, you wouldn’t know, after being turned off for so long. Uh…Tadashi,” And wow even saying his name hurt. “Is gone. There was a fire and he, uh, he didn’t make it.”

“I am sorry to hear that.” A light buzzing sound filled the air. “Scan complete. Your serotonin levels are drastically low. Both you and Hiro should try: interacting with friends, watching humorous movies, or listening to pleasant music to raise them.”

You and Hiro shared a look. Neither of you had any desire to go out and talk with people, even if they were your friends. You knew that they’d just try to give you sympathy and you didn’t want sympathy, you just wanted your best friend back.

You were just opening your mouth to respond when you heard a soft tapping noise, glancing around the room, trying to find the source of the sound.

Hiro looked just as surprised as you, digging a hand through his pocket and pulling it out to reveal one of his microbots in a tiny glass container.

“What even?” Hiro asked aloud in confusion, studying the microbot. “It must be malfunctioning, it shouldn’t be acting like this.”

Baymax peered at the little robot, which was fluttering around in the case, banging on the sides. “It appears to be trying to escape.”

You raised an eyebrow, focusing your eyes on the microbot. It did look like it was trying to escape, but it was also banging mostly on the south west side of the case, like it wanted to go in that direction.

“Maybe it wants us to follow it? I mean, look at it. It is trying to get out, but only on the south west side, like it has to go in that one direction.”

After both Hiro and Baymax remained silent, you spoke again. “Hey, Hiro, you doing anything today?”

 He shook his head.

“You want to go see where this bot’s trying to lead us?”

“Give me ten minutes to change into something clean!” Hiro called, already scooping clothes from his dresser into his arms and dashing into the bathroom. You laughed, snagging one of Tadashi’s sweaters from the box (a grey, well-worn one with the San Fransokyo Tech logo and name on the front) and throwing it on over your __f/c__ t-shirt.

“Tadashi held very great feelings for you.” Baymax said suddenly.

You shrugged. “I should hope so, he was my best friend.”

“No, his feelings were not of the platonic kind.”

You furrowed your eyebrows together in confusion. “Then what were they?”

“They were of the romantic variety.”

You laughed bitterly. “Sure they were.”

“You do not believe me? I have proof.”

You were going to ask what he meant by proof when Tadashi’s face flashed onto Baymax’s stomach.

“Hey __y/n__, I was wondering if you maybe wanted to go grab a coffee sometime? Or, you know, a tea? Since you hate coffee?” Tadashi groaned, running a hand through his hair. “That was terrible. __y/n__, how about you and I go see that new Captain America movie? I heard it’s awesome.”

Tadashi shrugged, still seemingly unaware that Baymax was recording him. “That could work.” He rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “How about: __y/n__, I’ve been crazy about you for three years, do you want to go out with me?” Tadashi frowned. “No, that was worse than the first.”

Tadashi glanced over at Baymax. “Oh crap, are you still recording?” Tadashi approached the robot and you assumed he had ended the video because the screen froze on a close up of Tadashi’s face.

“Hey, why are you crying?” Hiro asked as he stepped back into the room, tugging on a jacket and zipping it up.

“I am?” You asked, bringing a hand up and feeling your face. “Oh, I didn’t even realize I was. I’m just, really happy.” You wiped your eyes with the palm of your hand. “Anyways, you ready to go?”

Hiro blinked at the sudden topic change but nodded, grabbing the bot from the table and stepping in front of you.

“Lead the way.” You said, gesturing in front of you. Hiro walked down the stairs, you and Baymax following him.

Luckily for all of you, Aunt Cass was serving a table and had her back turned, so you were able to sneak out unnoticed. You stepped out of the café, shoes tapping against the ground as you followed the bot to wherever it was trying to lead you.

------------------------------------

“An old, creepy, abandoned warehouse. Great.” You said sarcastically, eying the building disdainfully.

“How are we supposed to get inside?” Hiro asked after tugging on the chains that bolted the door shut and realizing that you would definitely have to find a different way in.

“There is a window.” Baymax suggested, pointing out the window.

Both your eyes and Hiro’s followed to where Baymax was pointing.

“Uh, Baymax, how are we supposed to reach that?” You asked; the window was up pretty high, and you and Hiro were both fairly short.

“I can attempt to boost you up.” Baymax offered.

You sighed, but went over to the wall where the window was located anyway.

“Hiro, mind if I go first? To make sure it’s safe?”

He shook his head, and you ruffled his hair, before Baymax picked you up and put you on his shoulders.

“If I die, you and the rest of the nerd herd can split my stuff.” You said, wobbling on Baymax’s squishy shoulders. You gulped, but managed to reach and climb through the window, sticking your hand back out and flashing them a thumbs up.

You kept your arm out of the window to help Hiro through, then you and Hiro helped pull Baymax inside.

The three of you crept down a stairway, glancing around the abandoned warehouse. There was a dull blue light coming from behind a curtain, and the three of you walked towards it cautiously.

It was a conveyor belt, and a machine, and the conveyor belt was spitting out Hiro’s microbots into a barrel. You looked around and saw dozens more barrels, eyes widening.

“What the heck? I thought they were destroyed in the fire that-“ You cut yourself off there, not wanting to continue.

Hiro opened his mouth to respond but you shushed him, you had heard something, something familiar. You mouthed a “Sorry” to Hiro, tiptoeing over to where you thought the sound was coming from.

It was a door, and you frowned when you discovered that it was locked. You glanced around, smiling slightly when you noticed a small, rusty old screwdriver that must’ve been left behind by the previous owners of the building.

You inserted it into the lock, twisting it carefully until you heard a quiet click. You turned the doorknob, and the door swung inward, revealing a dark closet. It was small, but apparently big enough for someone to pace back and forth in. The person stopped when they heard the door open, and they turned so that they were facing you.

It was almost too dark to see their face, but given what you had heard earlier (they were Tadashi’s footsteps, you had never heard anyone that walked at exactly the same speed and way as him), and the fact that you would recognize those eyes anywhere, you threw yourself forward, flinging your arms around him.

“We thought you were dead! How the,” You paused, glancing over at Hiro, who had followed you over to the closet, and lowering your voice. “Hell are you alive?”

Tadashi just smiled at you, leaning down and pressing his lips to yours, and it was so sudden that you forgot how to breathe.

He pulled away after a moment, cupping your cheek with his hand. “I missed you.”

You smacked his arm. “You missed me? We were all convinced that you were dead! What the hell is going-“ Tadashi rolled his eyes, closing the distance between the two of you and kissing you again.

You could vaguely hear Hiro pretending to vomit in the background, but you were too distracted with kissing Tadashi back to care. You skimmed your hands over his cheeks, his neck, his hair, trying to make sure that this was real, and not just a dream. You had had plenty like this before. Tadashi’s hands found the small of your back, keeping you pressed firmly against him.

“Hey guys?” Hiro asked worriedly, interrupting you. You hurriedly broke the kiss, glancing over at him.

“What’s wrong?”

“The microbots are moving.” Hiro frowned. “We’re not alone.”

Tadashi smacked a hand to his forehead. “Callaghan. He’s the one that set the fire because he wanted Hiro’s microbots. The fire spread faster than he planned on, but Callaghan didn’t want to be a murderer so he sent some of the bots to protect me. He’s kept me locked up in here while he makes more bots, and I still have no idea why.”

“We should probably go then?” You asked.

“Definitely.” Tadashi grabbed your hand, pulling you with him and gesturing for Hiro to follow him. “Baymax, hey buddy! Glad to see that you’re still up and running.”

“It is good to see you too.” Baymax said as you all crept towards the staircase leading towards the window.

The bots suddenly all turned in your direction, and Callaghan rose up on a pile of microbots.

You and Tadashi shared a look as the bots started to form together, looking like a giant tidal wave of death.

“Run!”

You and Tadashi sprinted forward, but stopped but when you heard Hiro struggling with Baymax.

“Come on, Baymax, faster!”

“I am not fast.”

You and Tadashi turned back around, gesturing for Hiro to run forward while you and Tadashi pulled Baymax along as quickly as you could.

“We’re not going to make it.” You deadpanned, glancing back at the swarm of microbots that was getting increasingly closer.

“Have a little faith, __y/n__.” Tadashi said, winking at you.

“Not the time for flirting, guys!” Hiro called from up ahead, where he was struggling to open a door. You flushed, letting go of Baymax and hurrying forward to help him. You both pounded on the door, kicking it and slamming against it until at last, it opened. You, Hiro, Tadashi, and Baymax all rushed through it, running away from the building as fast as you could.

---------------------------------------

You made it back to the café in one piece, surprisingly, and you keeled over, panting while you tried to catch your breath.

Hiro was repeatedly socking Tadashi in the shoulder, but he was smiling, really smiling, for the first time since he thought Tadashi died. Tadashi kept pretending to dodge, but he wasn’t really trying, and he was too busy laughing to care.

Baymax was watching a butterfly that had landed on a café table, studying it in fascination.

Aunt Cass came out of the café a few moments later, saw Tadashi, and screamed. Then started to cry. And then she fainted.

You grabbed her arms and Tadashi grabbed her legs, picking her up and helping her into the café. You carried her up the stairs and carefully placed her on her bed, before Tadashi glanced over at you.

“Is that my sweater?”

You blushed. “Aunt Cass said I could have it.”

“Wow, I’m dead for two weeks and you already start claiming my stuff?”

“What was I supposed to do? I was, man, I was dying without you here. I didn’t know what to do and whenever I tried to do anything, I started crying. I missed you so, so much and-“

Tadashi crossed the room in a flash, wiping away the tears that you hadn’t even known had started. “Hey, hey, it’s okay. I’m back now. And I’m not going anywhere, promise.” Tadashi wrapped his arms around you, letting you rest your head on his chest. Tadashi pressed a kiss to your forehead, removing one arm from around you and using it to stroke your hair instead.

You sniffled, dabbing away the remaining tears with the back of your hand. “So,” You started, pulling away from the embrace just enough so that you could look up at Tadashi. “What are we gonna tell Aunt Cass when she wakes up? And what are we gonna do about Callaghan?”

“How about we focus on that a little later? Callaghan kept me fed, but it was mostly just bowls and bowls of Top Ramen.” Tadashi shuddered. “And I would love to eat something that isn’t insanely processed.”

“Then how about we go see what Aunt Cass’s special of the day was?”

“Sounds good to me.” Tadashi said, smiling. “But first,” Tadashi tilted your chin up, leaning down and kissing you.

“Not that I’m complaining, but this is gonna be a regular thing, isn’t it?”

“Oh, yeah, no doubt about that.”

“Good, just checking.” You said, leaning upwards and pecking his lips. “Now come on, we have a lot of stuff to do after we eat.”
